Subaru's new generation All Wheel Drive Legacy GT spec.B offers more performance, more technology and outstanding fuel economy in a luxury package that is squarely targeted at the European premium car buyer.
Subaru's fulltime Symmetrical All Wheel Drive and its low-slung turbocharged Subaru Boxer engine provide outstanding control and handling performance characteristics that compares favourably to Legacy's European competitors.
Legacy GT also comes with a high-tech specification level that clearly exceeds comparable European models. And it comes with "Made in Japan" engineering reliability.
The 2010 Legacy GT's 2.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine is now rated at 195kW, an 11kW improvement over the outgoing model. Torque has also risen from 339Nm to 350Nm, which is now produced 1200 rpm lower down the rev scale from 2400 rpm.
The new Legacy GT has more low-rev torque than before, which translates to better performance in real world driving situations, because that 350Nm is available all the way from 2400 rpm to 5200 rpm.
The engine is a further development of the engine that has won International Engine of the Year in both 2006 and 2008 in the 2.0-litre to 2.5-litre category.
Legacy GT will now dispatch the 0-100 km/h in just 6.2 seconds with its five-speed automatic transmission, while the six-speed manual gearbox model takes just 6.3 seconds.
And the new generation Legacy GT is loaded with technology.
Premium models feature voice-activated Satellite Navigation and a voice-activated Bluetooth telephone system. These functions are fully integrated into a deluxe 10-speaker McIntosh entertainment system that can be paired wirelessly with a Bluetooth audio device such as a Bluetooth enabled i-Pod Touch or Sony Walkman. A reversing camera and DVD entertainment system are also standard on the Premium model.
Technology standard on all models includes rain-sensing wipers, fully automated dusk-sensing xenon headlights, a smart key entry system with push button start, an alarm system, and DataDot security.
However, the technology in the car is certainly not just about entertainment, communications and navigation gadgetry. Engineering technology leadership remains a real focus for Subaru with a particular emphasis on balance, traction, handling, and suspension performance.
Safety is also a major focus with the car equipped with seven airbags as standard, along with Vehicle Dynamics Control electronic stability and traction control, anti-whiplash front seats, front seatbelt pretensioners and load limiters, and four channel ABS brakes with Brake Assist and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution.
The Subaru ring-shaped reinforcement framed body offers excellent crash protection with a 5-star Occupant Safety Rating awarded by ANCAP.
In fact, Legacy is one of a select group of cars that has been awarded top safety ratings from all corners of the earth, with 5-star ANCAP for Australasia, 5-star Euro NCAP for Europe and Top Safety Pick from NHTSA in the United States.
The Legacy GT is a well-equipped car in the true meaning of its Gran Turismo badging – a car that will carry its occupants and their luggage in comfort quickly over long distances.
Leather upholstery on electrically adjustable front seats and a sunroof are standard throughout the range, as are a leather-covered steering wheel and gearshift.
The GT has a powerful and refined styling defined by its sports grille, front bumper and side skirts along with its 18-inch 15-spoke alloy wheels. It sits on Bilstein suspension that offers excellent handling characteristics and a very involving driving experience.
"We have a world-leading engine combined with a world-leading All Wheel Drive system," says Graeme Woodlands, Managing Director of Subaru of New Zealand.
"It's a compelling proposition for discerning individuals who demand total driving performance," says Woodlands.
"Especially if they seek high specification, technology and luxury features that further enhance the driving experience beyond pure performance credentials alone."
The technology has also dramatically improved fuel economy with overall fuel consumption of just 9.7 litres/100km for the automatic version (an 11% improvement over the outgoing model) and 9.8 litres/100km for the manual (a 6.7% improvement). The New Zealand Automobile Association independently tested the manual version on a circuit from Auckland, around the Coromandel Peninsula and return achieving fuel economy of just 7.83 l/100km over the 430km travelled.
The Legacy GT is Euro4 rated and CO2 emissions have dropped from 259 g/km to 228 g/km in the auto model and dropped from 250 g/km to 230 g/km in the manual edition.
DataDot Security, alarm, an engine immobiliser and a 3 year unlimited kilometre warranty are all standard.
Legacy GT spec.B starts at $59,990 for the sedan and $61,990 for the wagon. While the Legacy GT spec.B Premium with the fully integrated satellite navigation, voice activated Bluetooth, DVD player, reversing camera and 10-speaker McIntosh entertainment system is $65,990 for the sedan and $67,990 for the wagon.
